About this deal

Don’t be afraid to use emotive language to say how bad things are for you, such as 'I'm not coping with...' or 'I'm concerned about...' Diet: Some research shows a diet that includes foods with high levels of certain fats (e.g., polyunsaturated fatty acids and saturated fats) and omega-6 fatty acids may lead to flare-ups in some people.

If you are worried about needles or seeing blood, let the doctor or nurse know. They can make sure you are as comfortable as possible and answer any questions you have. Computed tomography (CT) scan: A CT scan creates images of the digestive tract. It tells your healthcare provider how severe the intestinal inflammation is.

Jedel S, Hoffman A, Merriman P, et al. A randomized controlled trial of mindfulness-based stress reduction to prevent flare-up in patients with inactive ulcerative colitis. Digestion. 2014;89:142-155. doi:10.1159/000356316 IBD clinical teams can register with the Preventis Web Portal free of charge. Once registered they can create their Competence Centre(s) within the portal. Their Competence Centre is the central hub where clinicians manage users and patients, and view test results. Patients’ faecal calprotectin results and their responses to the IBD disease activity questionnaire are automatically uploaded together to the portal. This enables clinicians to not only monitor inflammatory bowel disease markers, but also to understand the type and severity of symptoms that patient is experiencing. Having the ability to monitor patients, and become alerted to increasing or high calprotectin levels remotely, offers convenience for both the patient and the medical team. Colonoscopy: During a colonoscopy, your doctor uses an endoscope (thin tube with an attached light and camera) to examine the inside of your colon. Your doctor may take a tissue sample ( biopsy) from the colon to test for signs of inflammation. Once a patient has been enrolled into the SmarTest Calprotectin programme, each result generated from the faecal calprotectin test and the disease activity questionnaire automatically gets sent from their smartphone to the Competence Centre. The faecal calprotectin home test results along with the responses to the IBD activity questionnaire are logged in the online web portal where the IBD team can assess and monitor them from anywhere. The Preventis SmarTest system is the perfect tool for detecting active or escalating disease in patients outside of the clinic setting, and is designed to give easily readable and actionable results that help the patient receive fast and effective medical care. While conducting an endoscopy, your doctor may also collect samples of your digestive tissues for testing, in a procedure known as biopsy.

Barium enema: An X-ray is taken after a contrast solution is inserted via an enema (an injection of fluids) into the lower digestive tract to aid in seeing anything abnormal in the lower bowel. Barium studies have become less common because CT and MRI imaging tests are more widely available (see below). Sedation makes you feel sleepy and relaxed, but not unconscious. You will be able to follow simple instructions during the gastroscopy. You might not remember much afterwards about the test. If you have sedation or a general anaesthetic, you will need to arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you for the next 24 hours. Sedation affects your reflexes and judgment. You must not drive, drink alcohol, operate heavy machinery, or sign important documents for 24 hours after sedation. After taking the bowel prep, keep drinking clear fluids to prevent dehydration. You should receive information on how much fluid to drink and when to stop. Fluids help keep you hydrated and play an important part in the bowel cleaning process. You should get a letter telling you everything you need to know about the scan, including if you need to drink any contrast dye.Corticosteroids: Cortisone, prednisone and other corticosteroids ease inflammation brought on by autoimmune disease. Heat waves: People with Crohn's disease have anecdotally reported a heat wave may trigger a flare. Some research has found evidence to support this claim. Also called colorectal cancer, it often has no noticeable symptoms until late. But when they do show up, the symptoms can mimic those of Crohn’s disease. If your Faecal Calprotectin test doesn’t show inflammation in the gut, you might still have Crohn’s or Colitis – but it’s more likely that you have IBS or another non-inflammatory condition. Generally, a Faecal Calprotectin result of more than 100 micrograms/g would suggest that you should have further tests for Crohn's or Colitis - although different areas use different levels.
