About this deal

It took me longer than usual to fully immerse myself in the story, but by around 20% in, I started to feel the magic of the writing.

Dragonfall by L.R. Lam | Waterstones

Dragonfall 5 and the Empty Planet (1973): Tim and his brother Sanchez have to attend school on the Empty Planet, a place of whispering trees and musical rocks, from which the last inhabitants vanished without a trace. I am writing this just as I have finished the last chapter and I think I will be reading and craving the second instalment for quite some time to come! One of the things that really stood out to me was the queernorm world and the world building It was exceptional, but I have to admit that it did take a bit of effort to get into it.However, the side characters are equally excellent, and I hope we get to see more of them as the series progresses. Dragonfall is a brilliant, beautifully paced page turner of a novel, up there with the best fantasy and one of my favorite reads of the year so far. Dragonfall 5 is a series of children's science fiction novels written by Brian Earnshaw during the 1970s and illustrated by Simon Stern. Lam's Dragonfall is a powerful all-new imagining of dragons and humans and the wild magic burning between them, set in a divided world as brilliantly original as it is convincing.

As if the mythology of the Dragon world and the side stories weren't enough, the author throws in a heist, one of my absolute favourite things in any book. I loved how it mirrored the prophetic nature of dragon kind in this book and came to such an emotional close at the end. At the heart is the relationship between Everen and Arcady, two characters with opposing goals who should not, could not, ever love one another-and yet. Only Arcady knows the artifact's magic holds the key to a new life among the nobles at court and a chance for revenge. So when thief Arcady casts a spell to steal a powerful artefact and accidentally traps Everen – the last male dragon – in the human world, the consequences are deadly. If you can’t afford to purchase just now, putting in a request for purchase at a library or placing a hold on Dragonfall will also entitle you to digital incentives. Since this is the first book of a trilogy, I expect the romance was focused to build up the rest of the books on it. Dragonfall 5 and the Hijackers (1974): An old enemy plans to take control of Dragonfall 5 while they are on the water world of seals and walruses.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read one of my most anticipated reads of the year! The book is full of dragons, artefacts, many different manners of magic, friendship, growth, betrayal and so much more.

Overall I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it to other people who love queer fantasy and dragons! The ever changing POV's make the storyline/perspective really interesting - never have I ever read something like this before, but I must admit, after a few confusing chapters I was really into it! Lam’s short fiction and essays have appeared in anthologies such as Nasty Women, Solaris Rising 3, Cranky Ladies of History, Scotland in Space, and more. As I read on, I found myself dreading that as part of a series, the book would end on a massive cliffhanger, leaving me heartbroken and pining for book two. Disguised as a human, Everen soon learns that to regain his true power and form and fulfil his destiny, he only needs to convince one little thief to trust him enough to bond completely–body, mind, and soul–and then kill them.

The narrative style might also be the reason why I found the dragon's chapters so much more fun to read than the human's, unlike other reviewers. While there are still some unanswered questions, I thought the ending was resolved very well, which is another reason I think cozy fantasy lovers will be in to this one. Only Arcady knows the artifact’s magic holds the key to a new life among the nobles at court and a chance for revenge. It's more because I personally have less interest in her acolyte archetype than the others, so it has nothing to do with the writing and everything to do with me.At the end of the book, I don't know who I felt more sorry for Arcady (the human) or Everen (the dragon).
